Chapter Nineteen

When we arrive at the safe house, the family is already there since Henry had swapped to a different car and we’d kept an eye out to see if they were being followed. When we were positive no one was following, they continued the rest of the way to the safe house while we followed at a safe distance behind them.

We pull into the garage and park the car. We’d left the phone Lucas sent Leland behind at the police station, and Henry has someone seeing if they can get anything off it. I’m sure it’s being tracked, but Lucas would have to be stupid to think that Leland would take it along with him.

It’s a nice two-story house in the middle of nowhere, tucked back into the trees. It’s not even noticeable from the road, since the driveway is almost hidden. The house is nice and well taken care of, probably by the same crew that keeps his “apocalypse” house in order.

“Why’d you pick this house instead of the one you kept Henry at?” I ask curiously. I’d never seen this one before.

“Because Lucas knows nothing about this one. The one I kept Henry at belonged to Lucas originally, so I’m sure he already has eyes on it,” Leland says.

“Are you positive he doesn’t know about this one?” I ask as I shut the car off.

Leland looks thoughtful. “So I was thinking about the money Lucas gave me. Besides me being in his will before his ‘death,’ why else would he have given me the money?”

“Maybe he was worried that if he changed the will, you would know he’s not dead?”

“Yeah, but I knew nothing about the will beforehand. He could have changed it and I wouldn’t have been any wiser. But what if he wanted me to get the money because the man who handled it had to keep track of it and me. I wasn’t eighteen yet and couldn’t get the money until I was, so he fed me enough money to keep me afloat and out of the system. Was Lucas able to keep track of me through his money?”

“It’s a possibility… Cassel seemed to imply that he’d been watching you for a while.”

Leland shudders at the thought.

I reach out and squeeze his leg. “We’ll be okay.”

“I just… I thought my life was so much better, you know? I didn’t…” He’s struggling to find the words, but I know he has trouble weaving through emotions, so I take his hand in mine. He lifts our hands to his face and just presses them against his cheek, like he’s trying to feel more of me. “I don’t even know what to say. I just want this to end. I want to go back to our happy life.”

“We will,” I promise.

“You don’t know Lucas,” he whispers.

“I will do anything I can to keep him away from you.”

He nods before giving me a huge smile, like he’s pushed it all away. “Let’s try not to murder your family.” I know he’s wanting to change the subject, so I let him.
